Gateways to the Otherworld

Most of these cities, castles, islands, and other worlds were hidden beyond a mist, which you had to pass through in order to reach the destination. Sometimes you could barely see the person standing next to you. There were a couple of exceptions, like Eirek's holographic dragon, though they did travel through a very dark forest where they could see stars even though it was daytime.

Today we still have paranormal mists where boats, planes and people disappear, or experience otherworldly phenomenon, and the mists are often located over water. Today's paranormal mists are linked to places such as the Bermuda Triangle, and like the islands of old that changed location, they aren't limited to a single region of the planet. We don't know what lies on the other side, because the people who encounter them rarely return to tell the tale. So what are some of the stories we hear about today involving these mists, or glimpses into an Otherworld?

One pilot experienced a "low altitude cloud" over the Bermuda Triangle, and all we have are a few cryptic clues as to what he encountered. On February 11, 1980, pilot Peter Jensen was flying a Beechcraft Baron 58 from St. Thomas to Miami. He reported that he was lost in a cloud just 150 feet above the ocean. There was no reason for a cloud to have formed at this low altitude. His next transmission came eleven hours later and 600 miles away, long after his fuel would have run out. Then he vanished without a trace.

Jensen was a 14 year old aviation enthusiast, described as a "good pilot" by professional pilots who knew him. After his disappearance, reports surfaced that he'd been unhappy about his mother putting a halt to his flying lessons, and that he'd taken the plane from Harry S. Truman airport without permission. He'd been seen loading the plane with baggage.

Two hours after takeoff, a plane was spotted that matched the description of the Beechcraft, refueling in South Caicos Island. Four hours after takeoff, three pilots flying near Bermuda heard a distress call from a plane which matched the Beechcraft's number. The plane was about to crash into the ocean about 6.5 miles southeast of Miami. Later, the Beechcraft was allegedly seen in Jamaica, which suggests that the teenager had simply stolen a plane and run away from home. Neither the plane nor Jensen ever reappeared, and were presumed lost at sea.

Was Jensen simply a runaway who staged his own disappearance, laying the blame on a Bermuda Triangle legend where no one could follow? Did he crash into the ocean? Or did officials concoct this convenient cover story, not wanting to frighten people that "clouds" existed that you could disappear into? Did Jensen run off to start a new life where no one could tell him what to do? Or was he whisked off through a portal to another world? One could only hope that his destination was as pleasant as the paradise legends and not Davy Jones graveyard.
